How do I apply for the Smart Export Guarantee in Scotland?

Choose an SEG tariff, then apply directly to that supplier, usually online. You will need your MCS certificate, your export meter details and proof that you own the installation or have the owner's permission. The supplier checks your documents, confirms your meter can record exports and then starts paying for the electricity you export.

  1. 1Get your system installed and certified. We install through MCS-certified partners, who register the installation and issue your MCS certificate.
  2. 2Make sure you have a smart meter that records exports. Ask your electricity supplier to fit or set one up if needed.
  3. 3Compare SEG tariffs and check the terms, including any requirement to switch your electricity supply.
  4. 4Apply to your chosen supplier with your documents.
  5. 5Wait for confirmation. The supplier verifies your details and sets up export payments.

What documents do I need to apply for SEG?

Most suppliers ask for your MCS installation certificate, your export MPAN or meter number, your address and bank details, and proof of ownership or permission from the owner. Some also ask for the network operator's connection confirmation or an electrical installation certificate, which your installer provides when the system is commissioned.

An MPAN is the 13-digit reference for an electricity supply point. Homes that export usually have a separate export MPAN, which your supplier or network operator can provide.

Who is my network operator in Scotland?

Scotland has two electricity network operators. SP Energy Networks covers central and southern Scotland, including Glasgow, Edinburgh and the Borders. Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks, known as SSEN, covers the north, including the Highlands, Aberdeen, Dundee and the islands. Your installer notifies the right operator when your system is connected.

How long does it take to start receiving SEG payments?

Once your application is complete, most suppliers take a few weeks to approve it and set up export readings. Timings vary between suppliers and depend on your smart meter sending export data correctly. Payments are usually made monthly or quarterly, and it is worth asking whether payments are backdated to your application date.

Can I apply for SEG as a tenant or new homeowner?

Tenants can apply if they have the owner's permission and the installation is eligible. If you bought a home that already has solar panels, you can apply for SEG as long as the system has an MCS certificate or equivalent and a suitable export meter. Ask the previous owner or installer for the paperwork.

If the system already receives Feed-in Tariff export payments, it cannot also receive SEG payments for the same exports.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a deadline to apply for SEG?

No. There is no deadline, but you are only paid for exports after your application is accepted, so it makes sense to apply as soon as your system is installed.

Do I apply for SEG through the Scottish Government?

No. SEG applications go directly to the energy supplier offering the tariff. The scheme is regulated by Ofgem across Great Britain.

Can I apply before my smart meter is installed?

You can start, but payments need metered export data. Most suppliers will not complete the application until a suitable smart meter is in place.

What if I have lost my MCS certificate?

Your installer can provide a copy, or you can look up the installation on the MCS website using your address or certificate details.
