Getting the most from SEG with a home battery

A battery lets you store solar power and choose when to use or export it. Here is how that works with the Smart Export Guarantee.

Can I get SEG payments if I have a battery?

Yes. Adding a home battery does not stop you receiving Smart Export Guarantee payments for electricity your solar panels export. What varies is how suppliers treat electricity exported from the battery itself. Some pay for all exports, others only for solar-generated electricity, so check the supplier's battery terms before you apply.

How does a battery increase SEG income?

A battery stores surplus solar power during the day so you can use it in the evening or export it when a time-of-use tariff pays a higher rate. Instead of exporting everything at midday, when export prices are often lowest, you shift exports to more valuable times, which can raise income per kilowatt hour exported.

For many homes the bigger benefit is using more of your own solar power and buying less from the grid. Export income is a bonus on top.

Fixed vs variable SEG rates explained

Is a battery worth it for SEG in Scotland?

It depends on your usage, roof, tariff and budget. Scottish homes export most solar power between spring and early autumn, so a battery helps most in those months. If you are out during the day or use a lot of electricity in the evening, a battery is more likely to pay off than if you are home all day.

What size battery do I need for SEG?

Home batteries typically range from about 5 to 15 kilowatt hours, and the right size depends on your solar array, daily usage and tariff. A battery that is too large may never fill in winter, while one that is too small leaves summer surplus exported at lower rates. A survey sizes it properly.

Can I add a battery to an existing solar system and keep SEG?

Usually, yes. You can add a battery to existing solar panels and keep your SEG tariff, but tell your supplier and make sure the battery is installed correctly and the network operator is notified. Some suppliers ask for updated paperwork, and you may want to move to a tariff that rewards battery exports.

We install through MCS-certified partners, who handle the network operator notification for you.

Frequently asked questions

Does SEG pay for electricity I charge into my battery from the grid?

SEG itself only covers electricity from eligible generation such as solar panels. Some suppliers choose to pay for all exports from a battery, so read the tariff terms carefully.

Will a battery keep my power on during a power cut?

Only if it has a backup power feature and is wired for it. Many standard battery installations switch off during a power cut for safety.

Do I need a separate meter for a battery?

A separate meter is not normally needed. Your smart meter measures exports from the house, whether they come from the panels or the battery.

Can I add a battery later?

Yes. Many homes add a battery to an existing solar system. A survey checks your inverter and wiring to find the right option.
